In Celebration of Valentine’s Day

 

For the celebration of Valentine’s Day our Family Home Evening the week was especially tender.  I chose to do the lesson on Elder Bednar's Talk from General Conference October 2009.  Video of Elder Bednar's talk.  The title of the talk was “More diligent and concerned at home”.  A line taken from the 93rd Section of the Doctrine and Covenants.  We all learned a lot!  Throughout the talk, Elder Bednar gave suggestions on ways that we can, in deed, be more “diligent and concerned at home”.  We learned that by doing these things we will have “love at home”. 

We had so much fun doing this activity. We learned how important it is to show and express love at home, bear testimony of the things we know to be true and “be consistent”. 

Everyone really liked doing this and it was so easy to make!  First I folded a few sheets of red construction paper so that I could cut four hearts out by only drawing two half-hearts.  I made twelve red hearts and four pink hearts.  On the red hearts, I wrote down suggestions from Elder Bednar’s talk.  On the pink hearts, I wrote things that would have a negative impact on our families.  Then I fanned them out in the shape of the flowers to see how big to cut my stems and grass.  I used more construction paper for that.  I printed out the first line of “Love at Home”, the hymn we sang to open the evening.  I put all the hearts together in a basket and passed them around.  When each person read the heart they grabbed they had to decide to put it on the end of the stem or rip it up and throw it into the fire.   As the flowers started to come together, everyone could see how it made since.  I think they are really pretty!

We also had a really nice discussion about the ideas and suggestions mentioned in the talk.   We closed the lesson with the Hymn “Love one Another”. Thanks everyone for participating!  It was a great Family Home Evening.
